R-50 Systems: Innovative, High-Efficiency Roofing and Wall Insulation

Insulation Board, Roof Insulation

As a leader in thermal technology and recipient of a United States patent, R-50 Systems identified this gap and filled it with a superior, high-performing insulation product: Rich-E-Board™.

Rich-E-Board™ is the most advanced insulation technology on the market today. The 1.5” profile, vacuum-sealed, high R-value, compact fiberglass insulation panel meets and exceeds all local/regional, national and federal guidelines while offering superior fireproof and mold resistant capabilities.

R-50 Systems understood the potential for a drastic reduction in long-term energy costs by improving the thermal performance of the roof/wall building envelope. Beyond simply reducing energy loss, the lightweight low-profile panel also creates additional short-term savings in re-roofing, total replacement, structural retrofitting, construction and shipping costs.

Developing a product that was a 99% recyclable helped to inject sustainability while reducing the environmental footprint and landfill space. Additionally, the water-resistant panel is perfect for insulation needs under green, vegetative roofs.

With both residential and commercial/industrial applications, this U.S.-fabricated panel can be scaled to suit R-value requirements and will fit low slope roof applications without sacrificing higher R-value insulation needs or requirements.

Conventional insulation options requires up to 15” of height to reach the R-50 value, making it impractical and costly when retrofitting buildings to accommodate that extra height.

The R-50 Systems products meet or exceed those extremely high R-value requirements which comply with code and energy-savings requirements — all with a 1.5” or less thickness.

R-50 Systems employs a High-Density Composite Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP). The high-performance fiberglass core is vacuumed sealed in a plastic reinforced polyester barrier, offering fire protection and water resistance.

The Vacuum Insulated Panel is set between a pair of fire-rated boards, making it moisture and mold resistant as well as fire proof — something that conventional insulation does not offer.

And unlike the more fragile VIPs, our panels have high impact capabilities that are compressively strong, capable of accommodating heavy foot traffic and resistance to hail damage. It also meets wind uplift 1-120 (ANSI/FM 4474).

Additionally, according to the GSA Green Proving Ground, the projected savings on electricity and natural gas are 8% and 10% respectively.

The Value Proposition

Reduced Construction Cost

The advances made in the Rich-E-Board technology defray the costs of expensive building modifications and structural retrofits.

A recent GSA test case showed that VIPs proved 53% less expensive than the building modifications necessary to accommodate the thicker conventional R-50 materials. Additionally, Oak Ridge National Laboratories reported that the use of R-50 Systems roof insulation resulted in a savings of $200,000.00 (10,000 sq.ft. area).

Thinner insulation means more usable space for living or operations potentially giving profitability another boost.

The lightweight nature of each panel (2lbs/sq.ft.) has additional cost reducing benefits including:

  • Less transportation required (thereby lowering shipping costs)
  • Less handling in shipping
  • Less job site handling
  • Lowers overall labor requirements
  • Fewer onsite hoisting machines

Reduction of Energy Cost

Making the building envelope more compact can reduce overall building energy consumption.

Increasing from R-15 to R-50 drastically reduces heat losses by 5 to 10 times larger R-value/inch (U.S. Department of Energy).

The GSA simulations have shown that R-50 insulation can reduce:

  • Electric bills by up to 8%
  • Natural gas by 10%

Rich-E-Board is 100% recyclable

Reusability means less waste

Lowered impact on landfills and the environment

  • Over 8 times less waste goes into landfills than with conventional roofing

Increased service life of roof reduces:

  • Operational energy costs
  • Maintenance costs
  • Replacement costs (as much as 60% for long-term replacements)

Higher R-values increase interior environment

  • Comfort
  • Stability

It’s lower profile and water resistance is perfect for use under a green roof

Less energy required lowers natural resource use
